    In light of Singapore’s declaration of war on diabetes in 2017 and how diabetes has been at the forefront of technological advances that has witnessed the convergence of health technologies with digital telecommunications, Singapore-Stanford Biodesign Thought Leaders Series (SSB TLS) presents ‘Diabetes Sandbox: Interface between Medical Technology and Digital Health’.

    This forum aims to highlight the potential opportunities for healthcare innovation in Asia given current technological, industry and market trends informing the path to commercialization to enable more effective integrated care, using diabetes as an example. Key highlights for this year’s TLS includes the following:

    1. Insights into Diabetes Management in Asia: Let our 8th batch of SSB fellows share a glimpse of their insights from immersions in US and Asia on how understanding of a region’s diabetes disease management cycle can affect the innovation and implementation process.
    2. Keynote Lecture: Mr Michael Kloss, President and CEO of Ascensia Diabetes Care Holdings AG, will draw from >20y of experience in the medical device industry to share the impact of evolving diabetes technologies and his vision to expand Ascensia’s footprint in in Asia.
    3. Panel Session: Our stellar multidisciplinary moderator and panelists features clinicians, hospital IT administrator and seasoned industry executives to discuss the challenges and hurdles faced in implementing diabetes technologies in Asia.
    4. Diabetes Technologies Showcase: Featuring a selection of the latest innovations in diabetes technologies spanning multi-disciplinary care in the hospital and at home.

    Keynote Speaker and Panel Profile

    Keynote Speaker: Mr. Michael Kloss, CEO, Ascensia Diabetes Care

    Michael Kloss is the CEO of Ascensia Diabetes Care, and has held this position since the organization was launched as a new, standalone company in January 2016. In his role as leader of the business, Michael has overseen the sale of Bayer's Diabetes Care business to Panasonic Healthcare Holdings Co. Ltd, and the establishment of Ascensia Diabetes Care as a new company. Prior to Ascensia Diabetes Care, Michael served as Global Head of Diabetes Care Commercial Operations at Bayer Consumer Care for 3 years. In this position, Michael was responsible for leading and coordinating all global commercial, marketing, and business development activities. Michael has more than 20 years' experience in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries and has held a variety of positions. He joined Bayer Consumer Care in 1995 as Export Manager in Paris, France. Since then he has held various roles at Bayer including Business Group Representative in Consumer Care for East Africa, Poland's Country Division Head for Bayer Consumer Care and Senior Vice President for the Europe and Middle East, Russia, and Asia. Michael received his bachelor's degree at the University of Birmingham, UK and his MBA from the University of Paris. He also studied Executive Leadership at Harvard Business School, Boston, USA.

    Moderator: Mr. Fredrik Nyberg, CEO, APACMed

    Fredrik Nyberg is Chief Executive of Asia Pacific Medical Technology Association (APACMed). He brings 30 years’ experience in the medical device industry, 25 of which were spent in Asia-Pacific. He has worked across the region and lived in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. He has a background in both senior strategic consulting roles and in operational sales, marketing and general management positions. Fredrik has also worked extensively with start-up medical technology companies both as advisor and as venture capitalist.He was most recently Senior Director and Medical Technology Practice Lead at Quintiles Consulting, based in Singapore. He began his career in Asia with Ohmeda, now separate units of GE Healthcare, Becton Dickinson and Baxter. Fredrik holds a BSc from Gothenburg University, Sweden, and an MBA from Henley Management College, UK.


    Dr. Bee Yong Mong, Head, SingHealth Duke-NUS Diabetes Centre

    Dr. Bee is currently a Senior Consultant in the Department of Endocrinology, Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore. He graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1998 and completed his specialist training in Endocrinology at SGH in 2008. Following that, he spent a year training at the Joslin Diabetes Centre in Boston (Section of Islet Cell and Regenerative Biology) under the supervision of Professor Susan Bonner-Weir. He was awarded the National Medical Research Council New Investigator Grant in 2011. Dr. Bee led the development of the SingHealth Endocrinology Residency Programme and was the inaugural Programme Director from 2012 to 2015. He was appointed Head, SingHealth Duke-NUS Diabetes Centre in 2015 and worked on transforming and integrating diabetes care at SingHealth. He also oversees the establishment of the SingHealth Diabetes Registry, which is a multi-institutional database built from SingHealth Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. He is currently a member of the Ministry of Health Diabetes Prevention and Care Taskforce (Disease Management Workgroup) as well as the National Diabetes Database Working Committee.
    Dr. David Klonoff, Chairman, Diabetes Technology Society, US
    Medical Director, Diabetes Research Institute Mills-Peninsula Medical Center

    David C. Klonoff, M.D. is an endocrinologist specializing in the development and use of diabetes technology. He is Medical Director of the Dorothy L. and James E. Frank Diabetes Research Institute of Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in San Francisco and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF. Dr. Klonoff received an FDA Director’s Special Citation Award in 2010 for outstanding contributions related to diabetes technology. In 2012, Dr. Klonoff was elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and cited as one of the 1000 top bioengineers in the world, as well as among the top 2% of the world’s bioengineers for his engineering work in diabetes technology. He received the 2012 Gold Medal Oration and Distinguished Scientist Award from the Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation of Chennai, India. Dr. Klonoff was invited to speak to the US Congressional Diabetes Caucus in 2017, participate in the White House Health and Cybersecurity Roundtable in 2015, and speak at the European Parliament in 2010. He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. He has authored over 280 publications. Dr. Klonoff has been a Principal Investigator on 110 clinical trials of diabetes drugs and devices. He was the lead investigator for the first randomized controlled multicenter trial of an outpatient artificial pancreas product, and published the results in the New England Journal of Medicine. He chaired the scientific advisory board for the first FDA-cleared insulin patch pump and participated in developing the first FDA-cleared dedicated diabetes telemedicine system. Dr. Klonoff coined the term “diabetes technology” and founded the Diabetes Technology Meeting, the Digital Diabetes Congress, and the Medical Device Security and Privacy Meeting. Dr. Klonoff has chaired or served on 52 grant review panels, including, for the US, NIH, CDC, NASA, NSF, US Army, NOAA, ADA, and JDRF; plus agencies in 7 foreign countries. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the TexasA&M/UCLA/FIU/Rice PATHS-UP Engineering Research Center and an affiliate member of the Baylor University Center for Space Medicine. Dr. Klonoff is a graduate of UC Berkeley, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year, and UCSF Medical School, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in his junior year. His postgraduate training included two years at UCLA Hospital and three years at UCSF Hospitals. He is a member of the Healthcare Sector Coordinating Council Joint Cyber Working Group for Medical Devices/Healthcare. He chaired DTSec and DTMoSt, the world’s 1st and 2nd consensus medical device cybersecurity standards.
    Mr. Linus Tham, Group Chief Information Officer, Parkway Pantai Limited

    Mr Tham holds the appointment of the Group Chief Information Officer of Parkway Pantai Limited. Parkway Pantai Limited is a fully owned subsidiary of IHH Healthcare Berhad, one of the largest healthcare groups in the world by market capitalisation. Beyond overseeing the operations of the group’s IT ecosystem, Mr Tham plays a key role in the strategic development of its IT projects and infrastructure in support of the company’s business objectives, as well as readying the organisation for the digital revolution in the healthcare sector. He is particularly keen in seeking out innovative new digital technologies or innovative ways to leverage such technologies to transform healthcare and how it is delivered. Prior to this appointment, he was concurrently the Group Chief Corporate Development Officer and Group Chief Operating Officer at the National Healthcare Group (NHG) where he was responsible for strategic planning and the group’s activities in population health and care integration. Prior to that, Linus held positions as Chief Information Officer at Raffles Medical Group and NHG, as well as Chief Technology Architect, Managing Director and Head at DBS Bank’s Enterprise Architecture and Services unit.

    Every year SSB organizes its annual Fellowship graduation ceremony and networking dinner which is attended by representatives from government agencies, MNCs, start-ups, venture capital firms, hospitals, universities and others.     1. Closed-Door Networking for Friends and Partners of SSB

    SSB’s annual networking event takes place alongside with the yearly graduation of SSB fellows and innovation class students. Various stakeholders ranging from the MedTech ecosystem, both locally and internationally and SSB Partners, attend this event every year.

    Since the inauguration of Singapore-Stanford Biodesign (SSB) as a training initiative in 2010, in partnership with A*STAR, EDB and Stanford Biodesign, the programme has been evolving to meet the changing demands of the ecosystem while ensuring greater focus on the Asia market. This event will highlight the outcomes and partnerships of the SSB programme and Fellows 2018, and unveiling of the new Singapore Biodesign (SB) and its vision.
