About Innovation Class
In partnership with all top universities in Singapore, SSB offers the only joint post-graduate course to the students from National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU), Duke-NUS Medical School, NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Singapore University of Technology and Design and Singapore Institute of Technology. By training a wider talent pool at national-level, SSB wishes to create a critical mass of Biodesign trained medtech innovators in Singapore.
Students from the class work on real-world unmet clinical needs as team-based design projects, overseen by our SSB Fellows. They are taught various aspects of the medical device innovation processes that include clinical needs analysis, market analysis, brainstorming, prototyping, intellectual property, regulatory, reimbursement, product development, business plan development and financing. The Innovation Class is delivered with the help of both academicians and industry professionals, so that students can gain a good theoretical grasp of topics, as well as hear from real-world practitioners.
To consolidate their understanding, university students participate in team-based, interdisciplinary medtech innovation projects solving real clinical needs identified by the fellows during their immersions in the various hospitals in the United States, Singapore, Indonesia and Korea. Students are expected to present a business plan and a prototype to a panellist of physicians, investors, industry executives and entrepreneurs at the end of the course. This makes the class very hands-on with real-world relevance.
The class also accepts working professionals who sign up as private students, making it a very diverse group and thus enriching the overall experience for all the participants. Private students are expected to complete individual reports but are not required to fulfil project-based deliverables. Every year a resume book comprising of participants from the SSB class is compiled and circulated to the relevant parties to help students enter the medtech industry upon graduation.
